From 540 to 720: How I Improved My Credit Score in 6 Months as a Divorced Single Mom

Updated: Mar 18

As a single mom, it can be challenging to hold on to good credit, especially if you're dealing with financial issues following a divorce. But with dedication and the right information, it's possible to improve your credit score and get back on track financially.

When I first checked my credit score a few years ago after turning 40, it was an embarrassing 540. I knew I had to take action to improve it if I wanted to achieve my financial goals and provide for my daughter. Here are the steps I took to improve my credit score by 180 points in just six months:

Checked my credit report: I requested a free copy of my credit report from all three credit bureaus and carefully reviewed them for errors, inaccuracies, and outdated information. I disputed any errors and worked to correct them.

Paid off debts: I prioritized paying off debts with high interest rates, such as credit card balances and personal loans. I also made sure to pay all my bills on time and in full to avoid late fees and penalties.

Increased credit limits: I requested credit limit increases on my existing credit cards to lower my credit utilization ratio. This helped to boost my credit score by showing lenders that I can manage my credit responsibly.

Opened a new credit account: I opened a new credit account to diversify my credit mix and demonstrate my ability to manage multiple accounts responsibly. I made sure to use this account responsibly and paid it off in full each month.

Monitored my credit score: I signed up for a credit monitoring service to keep track of my credit score and receive alerts for any changes or suspicious activity. This helped me stay on top of my credit and make informed decisions.

In just six months, my credit score improved from 540 to 720. It wasn't easy, but I was able to achieve my goals by learning what steps to take.
